Every one of my children passed through a phase when a night light was essential, not only for the child to rest easy but also for me to get a decent amount of sleep. How can such a tiny point of light make such a huge difference? Like a mini lighthouse, the night light guarded us from the dangers, both real and imagined, of our darkened house. One point of light drives back the shadows; it guides, directs, and warns us of danger.
At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Ephesians 5:8
Be the Point of Light
In Ephesians 5, Paul gives a long list of sins that ensnare those lost in the darkness. “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Ephesians 5:12) The life of the believer should be full of fruitful works, reflecting Christ’s light, and contrasting sharply with the lives of those who are still dead in their sins.
As the moon is a point of light when it reflects the sun, so we are points of light in the darkened universe, driving back the shadows. One point of light is a powerful thing. According to scientists, if the world was flat, the human eye can perceive the light of a single candle from about 30 miles away on a dark night.1
Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16
